Module 1: Gaps in Accuracy of Diagnosis and Quality of Treatment
Module 2: Overlap of Depression with Physical Symptoms and Medical Disorders
Module 3: Interpreting STAR*D
Module 4: Collaborative Care and Comorbidity Models
Introduction
One of the most significant changes in the approach to the management of depression in the primary care setting has been the application of the chronic disease model to this condition, and to approach depression as a relapsing, remitting condition analogous to other chronic conditions such asthma. Because of the link between residual symptoms of depression and relapse, the physician needs to treat depression to remission and then to monitor the patient's longer term response utilizing a measurement tool like the PHQ-9. Dr. Wayne Katon, University of Washington School of Medicine and Dr. Jeffrey Susman, University of Cincinnati School of Medicine will discuss the current state of diagnosis and management of depression from both the psychiatric and family physician perspective and explore the challenge for the primary care physician in making the diagnosis of depression in the setting of other conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic headache, GI distress and other pain symptoms and implementing evidenced-based approaches to treatment.
Intended Audience
This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with major depressive disorder.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Recognize important areas for quality improvement in the diagnosis and management of depression.
- Improve the accuracy of depression diagnosis in the presence of somatic symptoms, such as pain and comorbid disorders.
- Apply the findings of STAR*D to better manage depression in the primary care setting.
- Identify options for appropriate and effective therapeutic strategies to achieve remission in patients with persistent depression.
- Describe how a collaborative care model and chronic care model may improve the quality of care and outcomes in depressed patients including those with comorbid disease.
