Introduction

John Williams, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, Duke University School of Medicine has been a leader in developing and validating clinical tools for the diagnosis and assessment of treatment of depression. Dr Williams reviews practical depression management approaches for the primary care physician and supplements these with videos of physician/patient encounters.

Intended Audience

This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with depressive disorders.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to do the following:

  • Practice scoring and interpreting the PHQ-9
  • Demonstrate approach to incorporating PHQ-9 into practice
  • Apply a structured approach to suicide evaluation
  • Describe the common co-morbid psychiatric illnesses and screening approaches for bipolar disorder, alcohol abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.
  • Consider issues of patient preference for different forms of therapy (eg major forms of psychotherapy, combined antidepressant/psychotherapy, or antidepressants only) and medication adherence.
