Introduction

A significant challenge facing primary care physicians is the recognition of depression in many of their patients. When the diagnosis is made and treatment initiated, physicians are faced with the reality that discontinuation of medication is high during the first three months of treatment. Successful treatment will require patient follow-up and optimal adjustment of medication dosage to achieve remission. The following program presented by Wayne Katon, MD, University of Washington School of Medicine provides an overview of the scope of depression in primary care, a discussion of diagnostic and monitoring tools, and a review of the phases of treatment.

Intended Audience

This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with major depressive disorder.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Describe the individual, societal and economic impact of depression.
  • Utilize assessment and screening tools (e.g., PHQ-9) to assist in recognizing and diagnosing depressive disorders.
  • Distinguish depression from other related mental health disorders.
  • Outline the three phases of depression management and identify critical elements of each phase.
