Introduction

Irl B. Hirsch, MD, Professor of Medicine and Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Chair, University of Washington School of Medicine, reviews the basic concepts of the use of insulin in type 2 diabetes and provides a detailed discussion on premixed insulin preparations and insulin regimens that complements and broadens Dr. Einhorn’s audio webcast presentation on the use of insulin to manage type 2 diabetes. Dr. Hirsch also reviews meal planning concepts in the overall management of the type 2 diabetes patient on insulin therapy.

Intended Audience

This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with type 2 diabetes.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Describe the fundamental concepts of the use of insulin in the patient with type 2 diabetes
  • Evaluate the use of premixed insulin preparations
  • Describe the different stepwise insulin regimens
