Type 2 Diabetes: Pathogenesis and Rationale for a New Therapeutic Model

Mark Stolar, MD

Module 1: Understanding pathophysiology of early hyperglycemia

Module 2: Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk

Module 3: Progression of type 2 diabetes:Intensifying therapy

Introduction

Dr. Mark Stolar, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, uses a case study approach to illustrate the rationale for early and aggressive management of the patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In his case study of an Hispanic woman with type 2 diabetes, he compares and contrasts the traditional approach with new management strategies that focus on prevention and on addressing the underlying progressive loss of beta-cell function. During his presentation, Dr. Stolar highlights the importance of multifactorial risk intervention as an essential component of cardiovascular event reduction in the patient with diabetes.

Intended Audience

This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with type 2 diabetes.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Apply the knowledge of the underlying pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes to guide early therapeutic intervention.
  • Utilize a multifactorial risk intervention to the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular events in the type 2 diabetic patient.
  • Compare and contrast the traditional approach to the management of type 2 diabetes with new approaches that focus on prevention strategies.
