Introduction

Daniel Einhorn, MD, Medical Director, Scripps Whittier Institute for Diabetes, provides a basic overview of insulin options and regimens in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.  Dr. Einhorn will also review glucose monitoring and complications of type 2 diabetes.

Intended Audience

This continuing medical education program is intended for primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with type 2 diabetes.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of insulin therapy
  • Tailor the use of insulin to individual patients based on kinetic profiles of different insulin preparations
  • Relate to the patient the need for daily glucose monitoring and how much monitoring is enough
  • Review the clinical and life style measures needed to prevent or reduce the risk of micro- and macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes
